Health Care, Cows and Ice Cream

clock Mar 31, 2010 11:16 PM by author Brad

I received an email today that included a nice little story relating to the health care bill.  Probably not a true story but still very clever and a fun read.  I thought that it could use a little more detail and information to truely make it fit what is going on.  So I've included my version below the original.  Let me know what you think.

--From a teacher in the Nashville area

"We are worried about 'the cow' when it is all about the 'Ice Cream.' The most eye-opening civics lesson I ever had was while teaching third grade this year... The presidential election was heating up and some of the children showed an interest. I decided we would have an election for a class president. We would choose our nominees. They would make a campaign speech and the class would vote. To simplify the process, candidates were nominated by other class members. We discussed what kinds of characteristics these students should have. We got many nominations and from those, Jamie and Olivia were picked to run for the top spot. The class had done a great job in their selections. Both candidates were good kids. I thought Jamie might have an advantage because he got lots of parental support. I had never seen Olivia's mother. The day arrived when they were to make their speeches. Jamie went first. He had specific ideas about how to make our class a better place. He ended by promising to do his very best. Everyone applauded and he sat down. Now it was Olivia's turn to speak. Her speech was concise. She said, "If you will vote for me, I will give you ice cream." She sat down. The class went wild. "Yes! Yes! We want ice cream." She surely would say more.. She did not have to. A discussion followed. How did she plan to pay for the ice cream (Health Care)? She wasn't sure. Would her parents buy it or would the class pay for it. She didn't know. The class really didn't care. All they were thinking about was ice cream.. Jamie was forgotten. Olivia won by a landslide.. Every time Barack Obama opened his mouth he offered ice cream and 52 percent of the people reacted like nine year olds. They want ice cream. The other 48 percent know they're going to have to feed the cow and clean up the mess."

Alright now back up a little bit to where Olivia won and where there were questions regarding who was going to pay for the ice cream...

Olivia - President

Teachers - Government

Students - American People

Ice Cream Companies - Insurance Companies

Farmers - Doctors

Ice Cream - Health Care Bill

Cows - Patients

Your lunch price will be increased 10 cents per day, and that 10 cents will be going towards the ice cream fund.  You also will NOT be receiving any ice cream until the next school year.  During this time Olivia and the teachers will be negotiating with the evil ice cream companies.  The ice cream companies will be told what ingredients to use and how much they will pay the farmer for milk.  Of course the farmer will be getting less money for his milk but he wants the business so he has no choice but to agree to the terms.  The next year rolls around and sure enough Olivia’s classroom gets ice cream every day.  But now all the classrooms want ice cream, so they are also told to bring in an extra 10 cents per day.  Olivia and the teachers now have the brilliant idea that they will raise their own cows and make their own ice cream out on the playground.  They will only make vanilla but they can now make enough ice cream for the whole school and they are not concerned with profit so if some kids can’t afford the 10 cents that is fine because they will be collecting 20 cents per day from the rich kids.

After 10 years all the schools have evolved into one big network of ice cream making madness and of course the ice cream companies have gone out of business.  The farmers now work for the schools tending to the cows.

So what if Charlie wants chocolate ice cream?  Sorry Charlie!

What if Amy and Peter don’t want any ice cream at all?  Sorry you are required by law to take the ice cream!

What if Molly wants to bring in her own ice cream?  She can bring in vanilla ice cream.  It is against the law for her to bring any other flavor.

How The Government Will Take Over the Health Insurance Companies

clock Mar 26, 2010 3:54 PM by author Brad

If current insurance companies must drop all pre-existing condition clauses and agree to have no out-of-pocket limit then don’t you think they will be raising our premiums?  Are they supposed to just eat the cost of whatever the difference is?  They already only make a 3% profit, so even if they offer their services for free they will be loosing money.  So what does this mean?  It means that insurance companies will be firing employees left and right and looking for a way to not pay on claims.  Even before the bill they were bad about paying claims right away.  Now if you get injured the insurance company will be looking for any other source to reclaim expenditures.  Workmans comp, liability, personal, business they will be after any and all of these other insurance providers.  Then after a few years of being billions of dollars in the hole, they will be out of business, or they will need a bailout.  Can you see where I’m going with this?  Then the Government will own the insurance companies and you can say HELLO to SINGLE PAYER SYSTEM!!

Blue Cross and Blue Shield?  Nope…Obama Cross and Obama Shield!

Mutual of Omaha?  Nope…Mutual of Obama!

UnitedHealth Group?  Nope…United States Government Health Group!

Disclaimer for Democrats:  It is not my intention to incite fear and/or anger.  This is simply my thoughts as to what COULD happen because of this new health care bill.

Health Care Bill Passed - What Next?

clock Mar 22, 2010 10:17 PM by author Brad

Well the Health Care Bill passed by a vote of 219-212, and the reconciliation bill of fixes passed 220-211 Sunday night.  I'm sure most people already know about Bart Stupak selling his soul to Mr. Obama for an Executive Order to change the abortion wording.  The actual bill will probably be signed by Obama tomorrow (3/23/2010) and the bill of fixes goes to the Senate.  So the Health Care Bill will be law tomorrow and then what?  I've tried to parse some of this bill and get an idea of how it will effect me, my workplace and my parents.  But about the only thing that I'm sure about is that the insurance companies must lift their out of pocket limits and exclusions.  Other than that it will take a lot of time to get the rest of this in place.  How are they going to implement these state run exchange programs?  Will the smaller private insurance companies be pushed out of business, in turn leading to more unemployment?  I guess if you can go back to college and become a CPA you could work for the IRS which will require about 15,000 more employees in the next few years.  Will the small company that I work for go out of business or lay off many of it's employees?  If they have less then 50 employees supposedly they wont have to pay a fine for not offering insurance.  So will many other small businesses cut down employees to under the magic 50 number?  What about older folks like my parents that use Medicare or Medicare Advantage?  What will be cut from their benefits?

I present these questions because I don't really think that ANYONE has the answers.  This bill wasn't about Health Care, it was about CONTROL.  I challenge anyone to answer my questions with 100% confidence and assuredness.  This bill gets implemented little by little over the next 10 years, so it's not like a bomb going off, but more like getting hit in the head by one on those little plastic toy hammers over and over again.  They will be taking control of our lives one step and a time and most people won't even notice or care for that matter.  Most people will be happy living their own pathetic little lives, driving a Prius, and full of warm fuzzies because the Government is taking care of their every need.  And those people don't have to feel guilty about the people that are less-off, because the Government will be taking care of them to.  What a happy little Utopia...

NO WAY!!  We can not let this happen to our country.  The states will be fighting this in the courts, the Republicans will be fighting the bill of fixes in the Senate, and we must fight it in the trenches.  We are not powerless and we the people will be heard in November and in 2012.

What about the GOP ideas for Health Care Reform?

clock Mar 03, 2010 11:18 PM by author Brad

Well my Liberal friends I'm afraid that my soul searching is over now and I'm back to reality.  I was actually fully convinced that Mr. Obama was going to be adding the GOP's ideas for health care reform,  but I think this was just a ploy.  Politically it would have been very smart to include these ideas, because if the Republicans still said "No", it would make them look bad.  I was fooled into thinking that Mr. Obama had people working on these possible additions since the Health Care Summit last Thursday.  Instead all that was presented was a letter.

You can read it here:

Mr. Obama's letter to the leaders

This is a load of crap.  I think tomorrow I'm going to write a letter to by bank and let them know that I will be adding funds to my account.  They won't have the money but they should just take my word for it.  Unless you are a complete idiot you must understand that these GOP items will never be included in this bill in full.  As for tort reform it might include funds for pilot projects in the states to explore alternatives to resolving medical malpractice disputes.   There will be no capping of malpractice awards.  Mr Obama has made it very clear that he opposes these caps.  He did seem to like the idea of conducting random undercover investigations of health care providers that receive reimbursements from Medicare.  But that sounds like a Liberal idea anyway.  My take on his response to all other issues is... SCREW YOU.  He says "I’m open to exploring ways to address this issue" and "I’m open to including language to ensure that is clear.", let me translate this for you... SCREW YOU.

I WAS willing to accept much of the extra garbage in this bill if they included the GOP's ideas.  And I meant really include the meat and potatoes of these ideas.  The GOP has them all written up for you to see on their website.  But after this crappy letter, I am even more against this bill than I was before.  I'm not just against it, I'm pissed off that Mr. Obama actually thinks he is being bi-partisan.  Mr. Obama you have made a very costly mistake, you could have included some very simple yet vital Republican ideas into this huge piece of legislation and in turn you would have acquired support from a great number of us.  But instead you slap us in the face with more broken promises.  We will now rally together even stronger than before against this.  You had your chance and you blew it.

White House Health Care Proposal Plan B

clock Mar 02, 2010 1:40 AM by author Brad

Well I was actually pleasantly surprised to read that the White House will be coming out with a revised Health Care proposal on Wednesday.  Supposedly adding GOP ideas on tort reform and selling insurance across state lines.  Now they can't just put in a couple lines of verbiage on these topics they need to address them aggressively.  If this is the case then I think this is a very wise move their behalf.  The GOP can no longer say that the White House has ignored their ideas, and now voting against this bill could put anyone in a very bad situation.  This would change the dynamics of this very important and divisive topic considerably.

I think there would still be many problems with this huge piece of legislation.  Does it make abortion legal?  Will it cut Medicare?  Why doesn't it go in effect NOW instead of after Mr. Obama's first term?  How do we pay for it?  And many, many more questions would need to be answered.

After some soul searching I've determined that I have been against this bill not only because of the previous questions but also because I didn't want Mr. Obama to succeed.  And obviously that is the wrong attitude.  I didn't want him to win.  But that's a crappy way to look at this.  If he is willing to put REAL tort reform in this bill and actually allow insurance purchases across state lines...(I can't believe I'm going to say this)...Then I am willing to seriously consider this as a viable piece of legislation.  We can always change it and tweak it as we go.

I don't want the Government making medical decisions, or telling me I'm to fat for coverage.  I do want American's who don't have or can't afford health insurance to be able to get it, and get in NOW.  I've put my differences aside, now let's see who else will.

The Government, Health Care and a Story

clock Feb 16, 2010 2:27 AM by author Brad

I think most people agree that America needs Health Care Reform.  I said REFORM, not a complete takeover.  We do need something to keep the Insurance companies from declining everything, some tort reform, and maybe the ability to purchase insurance out of state.  We've heard all the ideas and I certainly don't have any of the answers.  But handing it all over to the Government would be like handing over the Road Runner to Wylie Coyote.

America offers you the ability to excel and make as much money as you can.  You'll have to bust your ass, but the sky is the limit.  On the other hand if you're lazy and don't even want to work at Mc Donald's then that is your right as well.  Most other nations have followed the socialist rule of keeping all their people equal.  They limit free market and capitalism and the Government provides what they think the people need.  In general there is no large group of poor or rich people.  This is part of what pulls down our overall health as a nation, we have a large percentage of poor people.  So the figures with America showing up last in health care do not take into account our emergency care, our technology, and our doctor's and hospital's abilities to perform a plethora of cutting edge treatments.  Why do you think the wealthy leaders of the other nations come here for important procedures?

But what the heck do I know?  I'll give you a little story below about what I know first hand.

Throughout my years of raising a family of five, I did whatever it took to keep everybody healthy and pay the bills.  I've gone without health care, I've used Medicaid, I've used our State's Health Insurance program for children, and I've paid high premiums for private health insurance.  There are programs in every sate to provide you with some type of Health Insurance.  They're not perfect and they're not a long term solution, but I knew that and I didn't take advantage of the system.  I was always busting my ass to improve our situation.  I went from installing radio's in cars to managing the whole store.  I even quit my job out of the blue one day to go back to college.  I took care of the house and the kids while my wife worked for minimum wage.  It wasn't easy, but I was never satisfied with living off the Government and barely getting by.  I didn't expect any help from the Government and didn't feel good about myself when I had to use some of the Government programs.  After my second try at college was successful I have increased my income 125% in the past ten years.  This is what America is about.

Now you might say something like: But you didn't mention any major health issues, and that would have changed everything.  Well I'll give a few examples.  About 7 years ago my wife became very sick with a neurological disorder.  She had difficulty walking, talking, holding things, and even thinking clearly.  We went to local doctor's and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, all to get an accurate diagnosis and some type of treatment that would help.  One treatment (that was not covered by insurance) entailed me giving her painful shots in the abdomen every day.  And each dose was $175.00.  I dealt with the insurance company almost every day and until last year I was still dealing with bills from five, six and seven years ago. Also during this same time our daughter was diagnosed Bi-Polar and was in and out of three different hospitals in two cities.  This situation is way too long to explain, but this was during a time when insurance companies didn't like paying anything for mental health situations.  I can tell you that this process was very difficult and expensive.  I did have health insurance through my employer so that was obviously helpful.  But after a few years of non-covered expenses and out of pocket maximums, the bills were outrageous.

Never during these times did I think about the Government helping me, or bailing me out.  It was my responsibility and mine only.  Did I expect them to give us money because she couldn't work for two years?  NO!  Would things have been better if the entire system was being run by the Government?  Would they have paid the $175.00 per dose for my wife's treatment?  Hell NO!  The Government would NOT have allowed some of the treatments that saved my wife's life.

You probably think I should be an advocate for free Government health care, but I don't want the Government any bigger or any more intrusive than it already is.  I believe in the free market and capitalism and that the Government can not provide us with Utopia.

Democrats Still Threatening to use Reconciliation for Health Care

clock Feb 14, 2010 2:05 AM by author Brad

Dems Eye 'Reconciliation' on Health Care, But Tactic Is No Smooth Solution

I knew this was coming.  And of course the most recent mention of it was from a Senator in my state of Iowa.

"I think a decision has just been made -- we're just going to go ahead"

- Senator Tom Harkin

Obama's getting tired of all the failures and now he's going to be pulling out the big guns.  Threatening Executive Orders and Reconciliation to continue with his radical agenda.  The Democrats know they only have a small window to get things done.  Because they will be losing House and Senate seats this fall.  They are getting nervous and starting to feel the fire at their feet.  I don't want this crap rammed down my throat and I don't think most of you do either.  Mr. Obama has been loosing support since the day he took office.  The American people are starting to see him for what he is; an arrogant radical Progressive.

Bi-Partisan Health Care Meeting Or Ulterior Motive?

clock Feb 08, 2010 1:24 AM by author Brad

Mr Obama certainly is persistent, I'll give him that.  He is now proposing a bi-partisan meeting at the white house with Democrats and Republicans on Feb 25th.  In an interview on Sunday with Katie Couric he said that he wants the Republicans to bring their ideas to the table.  What the heck is this going to accomplish?  Oh, I know, it will make him look like he is really trying to be bi-partisan.  If this health care bill fails, he can paint a picture of the Republicans as the problem.  You've heard the "CYA" acronym before right?

I could be wrong, but the only way that this meeting could possibly work, is if they scrap the monstrous bill being worked on, and start over.  The current bill was written by a bunch of Progressive whacko's behind closed doors anyway.  Let's start over, summon some real physicians, insurance experts, economists, business owners, rich people, poor people, white people, colored people, Republicans, Democrats and hash out something that will work for everyone.  I was being somewhat cynical, but that actually makes sense to me.  If I want some house plans drawn up and a house built, I contact an architect and a contractor.  I know health care is a difficult issue, but if we want something that will actually make a difference, lets get some people who know what the hell they are doing.

More TV time for Mr. Obama isn't going to work.  Empty promises and broken words isn't going to work.  I certainly don't promote that I have all the answers either.  But right now I feel that the current health care bill is way to radical and continuing to work with it is a mistake.
