Coast Guard Backs BP

U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen said Monday that BP is exhausting every technical means possible to stop the flow of oil in the Gulf of Mexico. Allen also said that pushing BP out of the way would raise the question of who would take over. Of course Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said he is not completely confident that BP knows what it is doing. So my question is... What the hell is the Government doing to help with this problem? Besides keeping their boot on the neck of BP?

Here is the response from BP as of today:

Subsea efforts continue to focus on progressing options to stop the flow of oil from the well through interventions via the blow out preventer (BOP) and to collect the flow of oil from the leak points. These efforts are being carried out in conjunction with governmental authorities and other industry experts.

Plans continue to develop a so called “top kill” operation where heavy drilling fluids are injected into the well to stem the flow of oil and gas and ultimately kill the well. Successfully killing the well may be followed by cement to seal the well. Most of the equipment is on site and preparations continue for this operation, with a view to deployment in a few days.

We figured out Nuclear Fusion. 

We put men on the moon. 

We can fly unmanned drones over enemy territory. 

My phone can tell me exactly where I am in the world within 3 feet.

We can clone animals.

We can turn corn into fuel.

We can create a influenza vaccine for new strains of influenza.

But we can't stop the flow of oil 5000 feet under the ocean.

I think someone somewhere is not being completely honest regarding this tragedy.  It is either much larger and worse than has been reported or they are too worried about being able to save this oil field.  I'm no genius but some type of explosion should put an end to this situation.  Maybe even a big ass ball of plumbers putty would work.
